Molson Romie, 36, Whatì, Northwest Territories

Why do you think caribou is important to Tłı̨chǫ people?

“First thing is the meat. Then it’s skin or whatever they call it, the fur, I mean the skin for the drumming. That’s about it, that’s all I know.”

Do you make drums?

“No, no, I wish I knew how.”

Do you drum though?

“I drum, yeah.”

What do you love about drumming?

“I just drum for myself. Because it feels…every time I drum or whatever, I can feel something. It makes me happy. It makes me think a lot of, a lot of things.”

What kind of things?

“Like the stuff I’m doing, I wanted to do things with my life. Yeah.”

Molson says his dad made this caribou hide drum for him when he was very young. “I  wish I knew how to make one,” he says.
